This course is intended to provide the foundation of knowledge, skills and behaviours for those students who aspire to study the full Level 3 T Level, which would then provide the opportunity to progress to higher education. There are many good reasons for a person to study this Level 2 including to prepare for the Level 3, to develop confidence in a new subject, to work towards their maths and English grades, or to achieve the license to practice. The qualification content meets the Department for Education’s (DfE) Level 2 full and relevant criteria for a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner in the workforce. Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners can enter the workforce as a qualified Level 2 Early Years Practitioner or continue to study for a Level 3 Diploma holding Early Years Educator status.
This is a 1-year course and has been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of the industry. You will gain knowledge and understanding of concepts, theories, and principles relevant to the Early Years/Childcare sector such as:
- Plan learning activities to support children’s development
- Prepare environments for learning activities to support children’s development
- Contribute to the assessment of children’s development
- Develop strong digital literacy and aptitude with the latest technology
- Develop an awareness of special educational needs
- Gain an in depth understanding of the education and childcare sector
This course will be delivered in a variety of ways including in a classroom setting, e-learning and in real-world environments. We also have our very own Early Years simulation room where the classroom learning is taken into a “early years setting” to put theory into practice. In addition to this, our strong connections with local early years organisations means that you will also get the opportunity to plan and deliver sessions to local early years groups. As part of the T Level Foundation, you are required to complete a minimum of 250 hours industry placement with a local employer, equivalent to 1 day per week over the 36 weeks course.

What can I go onto next?
This qualification allows a learner to count towards the Level 2 ratio as a qualified Level 2 Early Years Practitioner within the Early Years Workforce. Learners may work under supervision in a variety of roles such as:
- early years practitioner
- classroom assistant
- pre-school practitioner.
Learners will also get the opportunity to progress onto the Level 3 T Level in Early Years and Education at Buxton and Leek College. This is equivalent to 3 A-Levels so depending on your chosen occupational specialism you could progress on to:
- employment in the early years childcare and education sector,
- a higher/degree level apprenticeship.
- or a university course.

This course is designed for those who have a keen interest in a career in the early years education sector and wish to study at an advanced level whilst also gaining invaluable ‘on the job’ experience.
The T Level in Early Years Educator is aimed at preparing 16–18-year-olds for work, higher level apprenticeships or higher education. Students who achieve this qualification could look forward to a future career as an Early Years Practitioner, Primary School Teacher, Childminder or Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator.
This is a 2-year course and has been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of the industry.
You will gain a breadth of knowledge and understanding of concepts, theories, and principles relevant to the Early Years/Childcare sector, including the following core content and specialist units:

T-Level Early Years Educator
T levels are new, elite courses which follow GCSEs and are equivalent to studying 3 A levels and carry the same UCAS (University points).
You will be awarded an overall core component grade (A* to E and U) and a Distinction/Merit/Pass grade for your occupational specialism.

Tell me about the course
This course is aimed at adults over 19-years-old who may already be working as unqualified staff or volunteering within an Early Years setting. You must be interested in creating an environment in which young children can thrive and have an aspiration to progress to a more senior role in this rewarding sector. It is ideal for students who need a flexible training solution, that fits around their lifestyle and workplace commitments.
This qualification is designed to prepare you with the knowledge, skills and understanding to work in an early year setting and be included in staff to child ratios; to work with children from birth to five years and gain knowledge of children aged five to seven years.
Through completion of 10 separate Units, the qualification aims to support you to –
- focus on the study of early years education
- offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge
- provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills
You will need to be self-motivated as you will be required to study independently using suggested resources such as textbooks, trusted websites, Smart Assessor online portfolio, emails and Microsoft Teams. These resources will be introduced during your College Induction session. You will also need to fully participate in on-line tasks with your tutor and produce monthly evidence of course participation.
To complete the practical skills requirement of this course, you will need to work or volunteer for approximately 300 placement hours in an Early Years setting, alongside your studies. We recommend you attend placement for a minimum of 6 hours a week. You will be supported and mentored by Early Years Practitioner’s (EYP) within the setting, who will work closely with your Assessor.

How will I be assessed?
There will be no examinations or external assessments.
You will create an electronic portfolio to show evidence of your knowledge, understanding and practice in all aspects of Early Years Childcare and Education. This may include:
- Written and practical tasks
- Face to face discussions with your Assessor
- Reflective accounts of your own practice/experiences
- Witness testimonies from your Mentor/Qualified Colleagues.
You will be visited by your assessor in your workplace and will be observed and assessed on your knowledge, skills and competence.

Entry requirements
You must be at least 19 years of age by 1st August of the academic year you are enrolling.
There are no specific qualification requirements to enrol on the course, however, there is a requirement for Level 3 Early Years Educators (EYE) to hold GCSE English and maths A*-C, or a Level 2 qualification, including Functional Skills.
If you do not currently hold either GCSE or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Math, you will be encouraged to study this independently. Buxton and Leek College offer Math and English qualifications at no extra cost.
As this programme will involve working with children, you will be required to undertake a satisfactory disclosure and barring service (DBS) check.

This course is aimed at adults over 19-years-old who may be looking for a career change or to get back in to employment following maternity leave or long-term unemployment.
The Level 3 Supporting Teaching & Learning course is designed to prepare you for work or a foundation degree course. Students who achieve this qualification could look forward to a future career as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or Parent Support Advisor.
You will gain a breadth of knowledge and understanding of the skills required when working directly with children or young people in schools, colleges or special schools, and will study the following core units:
- Schools and colleges as organisations.
- Supporting health and safety in a learning environment
- Understanding how to safeguard children and young people
- Developing professional relationships with children, young people and adults
- Understanding how children and young people develop
- Supporting positive behaviour in children and young people
- Supporting children and young people during learning activities
- Supporting English and maths skills, and use of Information & Communications Technology (ICT)
- Support children and young people’s speech, language and communication
- Understanding how to support bilingual learners and those with special educational needs.
This course will be delivered face-to-face, one evening each week. We recommend you undertake a placement in a school or college for a minimum of one day each week. If you are not currently employed in one of these settings, you must secure a voluntary placement in order to develop your skill and put into practice the theory you have learned in the classroom. You will be given with one-to-one support when required and will be observed in your workplace.

You must be at least 19 years of age and have a good standard of English, Maths and ICT. If you do not already hold English & Maths GCSE Grade C or equivalent you may be able to study these in the evening alongside this course.

How you will learn
Teaching and Learning
The programme is taught by highly qualified staff with expertise across the four academic strands of history, sociology, philosophy and psychology. They have considerable experience in a range of educational settings.
The academic team are passionate about the discipline, and they work collaboratively to create and maintain high standards of teaching quality and an excellent student experience. They have worked in a variety of education settings and are engaged in research informed teaching.
The programme is delivered entirely online through our user-friendly student portal dashboard and intuitive digital learning environment. You will interact with your tutors and fellow students through a mix of virtual and live classrooms alongside tutorials. Group discussions and debate are held through forums and community spaces and the use of collaborative tools such as wikis for group projects and assignments. Digital texts, ebooks, journals, databases and more are available electronically via our library.
Pace of study
The academic year is made up of three 10-week terms, known as trimesters. We recommend about 20 hours of study per week to complete one 20-credit module over a 10-week trimester.
Assessment method
This course is assessed through 100% coursework with a range of methods, such as academic posters, essays, a literature-based project and pre-recorded presentations.

- 240 credits from a recognised qualification such as a Foundation Degree, Higher National Diploma, or equivalent international qualification (consisting of 120 credits at level 4 and 120 credits at level 5) in a relevant subject area
- Alternatively, if you hold other relevant qualifications and have significant professional work experience in this field, we can consider this too
- If you do not quite meet the entry criteria, we may be able to offer you a place on a 20-credit bridging module called Certificate of Credit in Preparing to Study at Level 6 (Education, Childhood and SEND) to support your progression onto this Top Up degree. Certificate of Credit in Preparing to Study at Level 6 (Education, Childhood and SEND) is a level 5 access route which, if successfully completed, can enable you to gain entry onto the BA (Hons) Education Studies Top Up degree
