Students explore next steps in education at Buxton progression event

Students and families from across the region gathered at the Devonshire Dome in Buxton to explore their next steps in education.

Hosted by the University of Derby – Buxton on Tuesday 12 May, the Progression Event offered current post-16 and post-18 students, as well as parents and guardians, the opportunity to explore pathways in employment, further study, apprenticeships and higher education.

A marketplace-style exhibition featured stalls from local employers, University of Derby representatives, apprenticeship teams, and organisations from the voluntary and community sector, offering an afternoon of advice, guidance, and networking opportunities.

Throughout the event, students had access to practical support through a series of drop-in sessions, including one-to-one careers advice, guidance on entry requirements and a CV & Personal Statement pop-up, where experts provided tailored feedback and take-away templates.

Dr Sarah Charles, Director of the Institute of Education and Skills at the University of Derby – Buxton, said: “We are committed to ensuring that every student feels informed, supported and confident about their next steps in education.

“This event offered a one-stop space for young people and their families to explore the wide range of opportunities available, from further education and technical skills training through to apprenticeships, professional careers and degree-level study.

“We are passionate about creating accessible opportunities for students across the region, providing them with the skills, knowledge and experience to succeed. For many, further education can be a starting point for a journey that leads to higher education, opening doors to an array of rewarding careers.

“Each student’s journey is unique, which is why we’re here to help discover the right fit for them.”

The event gave visitors the opportunity to explore the University’s Buxton campus, located within the historic Devonshire Dome. Facilities include a simulated hospital ward and nursery, media and IT hubs, a hair and beauty training salon and the AA Rosette-commended Harpurs Bistro, which includes seven industry-standard kitchens.
