Leek students are Wild about Wildlife

Students from the Learning for Living and Work Department at Leek campus of UOD – Buxton have been learning about wildlife conservation in their local environment and gaining an award at the same time.
Students have been working in partnership with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust to complete their John Muir Award. This has seen them learning all sorts of new skills like drystone walling, hedge laying/coppicing, bird box making and woodcraft whilst keeping fit and active in the great outdoors. The project has been funded for two years by the Heritage Lottery’s Young Roots project.

Shaun Rimmer, the  Senior Community Engagement Officer from SWT said:“It’s been great to work with the students, introducing them to new experiences and seeing them develop their confidence in an environment away from the classroom, whilst doing something really positive for the area that they live in.”

“This fantastic project has really done wonders for some of our students.  It is great to see them working together as a team, developing their communication and problem solving skills which are all such transferable skills for the real world.”
