Expert shares tips for students planning their next steps

Students considering their next steps in education are advised to explore their options by visiting an open event to help them make the right choice.

Experts from the University of Derby – Buxton are preparing to open their doors to prospective students on Thursday 12 November, where they can meet tutors, experience student life and find out how Buxton works with employers to ensure its courses are aligned with the skills that industry is looking for.

Liam Tobin-Ward, Head of Discipline for Further Education and Skills at the University of Derby – Buxton, has shared his top tips for choosing the right course and making an application that stands out.

He said: “Applying to college or Sixth Form is an exciting time but it can feel daunting, however, there’s plenty of support available to help you find the best option for you.

“My advice is to start researching courses early. Think about whether you’d prefer a practical, career-focused route, such as a BTEC or T Level, or a more academic programme. Check entry requirements and shortlist the subjects that genuinely interest you.

“Attending an open event is one of the best ways to get a feel for a college before committing. You can meet tutors, explore the facilities and ask questions about career pathways, progression opportunities and student support.”

Liam also encouraged applicants to make their applications personal and highlight what makes them unique.

He said: “Don’t miss the opportunity to show us who you are. We want to hear about your interests, hobbies and achievements, particularly where they relate to your chosen course.

“Any additional qualifications, relevant experience or activities that demonstrate your enthusiasm can also help build a strong application. Most importantly, be yourself and show us why you’re excited about the subject.”

The University of Derby – Buxton offers a range of further education programmes, including T Levels, apprenticeships and vocational courses in subjects such as Hospitality and Catering, Early Years and Education, Hair, Media, Sport, IT, Beauty Therapy and Public Services.

Students benefit from specialist facilities designed to bring learning to life, including a simulated hospital ward, a fully equipped hair and beauty salon, and Harpurs Bistro, which features seven industry-standard kitchens and provides experience in a professional hospitality environment.

The University of Derby – Buxton also works with local sporting organisations, including Derby County Community Trust and Buxton FC, to provide opportunities for students interested in sports education. Aspiring content creators, meanwhile, can gain practical experience using professional media equipment and technology.

Liam added: “We want students to leave us with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence they need to take their next steps, whether that’s progressing to higher education, securing an apprenticeship or moving into employment.

“Our specialist facilities, personal approach to learning and strong links with local employers help students connect what they learn in the classroom with the opportunities available beyond it.

“Our open event is a great chance to see this for yourself, meet the people who will support you and start imagining what your future could look like.”
