Summary

As an Apprentice Teaching Assistant, you’ll support teachers in preparing lessons, creating a safe, enjoyable learning environment, and helping pupils progress. Working alongside staff and governors, you’ll encourage positive behaviour, act as a role model, and promote the school’s ethos while contributing to an enriched, exciting curriculum.

Annual wage£14,526.20 a year

Structured pay review and progression in place. All staff are auto enrolled in a relevant pension scheme with an opt out option.

Training course; Teaching assistant
Hours; 37 hours per week Monday to Friday. Likely start/finish times 8.30am to 4.30pm term time only, subject to requirements. There may be some additional training days out side of term. Working hours will include time completing off-the-job training.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Duties will include;

  • Providing support to teachers in preparing for lessons and helping to create a safe and enjoyable learning environment.
  • You will work together with the class teacher to support pupils with classroom activities and help to manage behaviour.
  • You will support all areas of the curriculum including literacy, numeracy and ICT within the classroom.
  • You’ll also accompany teaching staff and pupils on trips and other out-of-school activities.
  • Other duties that may arise that fit with your role or add to your learning.

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

  • Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

Your training plan

Apprentices will attend 6-weekly on-campus activity days at the University of Derby – Buxton, transport is available from Leek. Addtionally, Apprentices will be assigned an Instructor-Mentor who will regularly visit them in the workplace, complete observations, professional discussions and discuss progress throughout.
